CADD (Roadway) Designer

Department: TRANSPORTATION DESIGN
Location: Herndon, VA

ATCS is looking for a CADD Designer to join the Transportation Design team in our Herndon, VA headquarters. The CADD Designer supports the roadway engineering design team by producing accurate construction drawings, plans, profiles, and details using Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software. Working under the direction of licensed Professional Engineers, this individual prepares and maintains plan sets for roadway improvement, reconstruction, and new construction projects in compliance with applicable standards and agency requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare roadway plan and profile sheets, typical sections, intersection layouts, cross-sections, superelevation diagrams, and detail sheets using MicroStation/OpenRoads Designer.
  • Develop horizontal and vertical alignment geometry, grading plans, and earthwork calculations from engineer-supplied design data.
  • Draft plan sets in compliance with AASHTO, FHWA, and applicable state/local DOT design standards, drawing standards, and sheet formats.
  • Generate corridor models, surfaces, and alignments in OpenRoads as directed by project engineers.
  • Produce signing and pavement marking plans, construction staging/traffic control plans, and erosion control drawings.
  • Assist in the preparation of drainage plans, culvert details, and storm sewer layouts.
  • Coordinate with surveyors, utility companies, and subconsultants to incorporate survey data, utility conflicts, and right-of-way information into plan sets.
  • Maintain organized project file structures, drawing logs, and revision histories.
  • Perform quality checks on own work to verify accuracy of geometry, scale, labeling, and sheet standards before submitting for engineer review.
  • Revise drawings in response to internal reviews, client comments, and agency review corrections.
  • Support the preparation of quantity takeoffs and summary of quantities sheets.
  • Assist with PDF production, plotting, and electronic plan submission packages.
  • Adhere to and actively support firm CAD standards, including seed files, level libraries, cell libraries, and sheet border templates, as maintained and distributed by CAD Management.
  • Participate in CAD standards reviews, training sessions, and workflow updates as directed by CAD Management; flag inconsistencies or conflicts in standards to CAD Management for resolution.
  • Attend trainings to stay up to date on latest software developments.
  • Works closely with CAD Management on testing workflows and new products.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in CADD Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of CADD drafting experience in civil/roadway engineering design.
  • Proficiency in Bentley MicroStation / OpenRoads Designer / ProjectWise Explorer.
  • Working knowledge of roadway design principles, including horizontal/vertical geometry, cross-sections, grading, and typical sections.
  • Familiarity with applicable design standards (AASHTO Green Book, MUTCD, state DOT standards).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, survey data, and technical specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering Technology or related field.
  • 4+ years of roadway CADD design experience.
  • Experience with state DOT projects and agency-specific CADD standards
  • Experience with GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS) for base mapping or corridor research.
  • Familiarity with right-of-way mapping, parcel research, or utility coordination.
  • Experience with LiDAR point cloud data integration in CADD platforms.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload to meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and take direction from engineers.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently on routine drafting tasks.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Primary work is performed in a professional office environment.
  • Occasional site visits to active construction or roadway project sites may be required.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position operating computer workstations for extended periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 lbs.

Our employees are the most critical part of ATCS. For this position, we offer a competitive salary range of $59,000 to $84,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The role is also eligible for an annual bonus, with a target 2% of the employee's annualized salary. .
